Our Environmental Commitment

As pioneers in Saskatchewan’s flare gas capture, we play a vital role in the global effort to curb emissions by providing infrastructure and opportunity for the energy community to redirect their flared associated gas while also effectively managing our own environmental impact.

Our commitment extends to creating and providing sustainable and economically viable solutions that minimize environmental effects for both ourselves and our customers.

Environmental

Management

Steel Reef has established a comprehensive suite of policies and practices to uphold environmental considerations throughout the entire lifecycle of our operations, encompassing land acquisition, project management, and restoration efforts. These include the implementation of project management plans, adherence to a pipeline integrity manual, and the adoption of our Operations Management System framework.

Committed to

reducing our

Emissions

In 2022, we formulated a plan to reduce GHG and air emissions. Our team has assessed various projects for their potential to decrease emissions, considering factors such as reduction potential, cost and feasibility. Going forward, our primary focus lies on co-generation initiatives, minimizing flaring and enhancing energy efficiency through optimized maintenance, monitoring and processes.

Reducing

Greenhouse

Gas Emissions for our Customers

Steel Reef’s expertise in flare gas capture enables oil and gas operators to reduce their emissions while maximizing their netbacks by recovering more resources through our midstream infrastructure. A notable portion of the gas we process, approximately 97%, is associated gas, which is a by-product of oil wells. Before it can be marketed as natural gas, this gas must undergo treatment at natural gas processing plants to eliminate impurities and natural gas liquids such as ethane, propane, butane, and condensate. Historically, associated gas has been largely flared or vented resulting in harmful impurities being released to the atmosphere.

In 2022, Steel Reef captured approximately 125 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/day) of natural gas, preventing its release through flaring or venting. By transforming these emissions into valuable energy sources, we have made a significant impact. Over the course of a year, this amount of captured gas is equivalent to displacing emissions or energy from 1.3 million homes.

Partnering

with Governments

Delivering lower-carbon energy

Steel Reef continues to receive commendation from various levels of government through our active participation in the Government of Canada’s Emissions Reduction Fund and the Government of Saskatchewan’s Oil and Gas Processing Investment Incentive.

Our dedicated teams collaborate closely with government entities to develop regulations that facilitate innovative solutions to achieve emissions reduction targets for CO2, methane and other greenhouse gases. To enhance regulatory predictability, Steel Reef has diligently registered all our facilities in Saskatchewan under the provincial government’s Output-Based Performance Standards program.

We take immense pride in partnering with the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan to invest in critical midstream infrastructure that fosters sustainable development and progress.
